LinuxFest History; a Grassroots StoryThe Ohio LinuxFest remains a non-profit and community oriented event. The Ohio LinuxFest was initially born from an effort to get Linux users groups of Ohio together to share in a day of talks, socializing, sharing, and community involvement. The first-annual event drew interest from a number of regional Linux users groups and was hosted by The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Since October of 2003, the event taken on a life of its own. The most recent Ohio LinuxFest drew top-notch speakers and guests of honor and was host to people from all throughout the United States and Canada. Recent events have featured speakers from Red Hat, Novell, the Apache Software Foundation, Samba Team, Asterisk Community, and more. Our guests of honor included Jon "maddog" Hall of Linux International, Scott Collins of the Mozilla Foundation and Trolltech (creators of Qt), Jeremy Cole of MySQL, Jim McQuillan, founder of the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP). Our Birds-of-a-Feather group sessions have included talks hosted by Beth Lynn Eicher of the Western PA Linux Users' Group, members of the FreeBSD team, and many more regarded members of the community. The response from the community has been extremely positive, and while there are always a few challenges in organizing an event of this magnitude, we look forward to creating an even better event for the 2006 season. The event continues to grow, with each year offering a successively better experience. Building upon our success, the Ohio LinuxFest team has recently formed a non-profit corporation, and we remain committed to making the next-annual Ohio LinuxFest one of the best community-oriented events around. We invite those interested in helping to contact the LinuxFest team to learn how you can become a part of the event. |
